Facebook

Hi, I have an issue with trying to sign into my facebook account. when i open the Facebook page to login to my account a box appears on the page the wirtes "facebook secure page" and on the bottom it asks me questions such as my full name, address, date of birth and social insurance number. I am more than happy to answer these questions but i dont know what a social insurance number is! its telling me that this is happening either because  i am signing in from a new computer or that i choose to answer a personal verification data. It is not my first time signing in from this computer as i have signed in many other times before, and i dont even know what a personal verification data is!  I just dont understand why this is happening. Please help me immediatly. thank you.

As consumers, we fill out hundreds of forms and applications asking us for our personal information. We are complacent when it comes to giving out that information and we trust businesses and institutions that they will protect that data. But that’s not always the case, as we have seen recently with the information breaches that have occurred. Your social security number is the one identifier that poses the greatest risk for identity theft if it falls into the wrong hands.

How do you know when you are required to give your social security number? Some businesses do have a legitimate government mandated need to identity you by this number. But there are actually very few instances when businesses have a right to that information. Some examples of entities that do need your SSN are: IRS, Department of Motor Vehicles, Welfare, Medicare, Medicaid, Unemployment Office, your employer, banks, and other financial services. When a government entity requires your SSN, they must also provide you with a privacy disclosure that tells you why they need it and how they will use it. A good rule of thumb is that if an agency is paying you, they usually require your SSN as a taxpayer identification number.

When someone asks you for your SSN, ask them why they need it. If they don’t know why, chances are that they don’t really need it. They simply ask for it because they have always asked for it and kept it on file as a way to match you to addresses or name changes and may sell this data to marketers.

The entities that don’t need your SSN include: doctors and health insurance plans, dentists, schools, utilities, libraries, membership organizations such as fitness clubs, sports teams, and social clubs. Publicly funded universities and colleges may ask for this number but must provide the privacy disclosure.

Keep in mind that if you refuse to provide your SSN, a business may also decline to do business with you. You’ll have to decide if you personally want to engage in business with someone who insists on collecting your personal data with no actual need for it. Try to encourage them to use another identifier.

There are 5 questions that you should ask:

  1. Why do you need my SSN?
  2. Who has access to it and how will it be used?
  3. How do you store and protect it?
  4. How long do you keep the information?
  5. How do you destroy it when you no longer need it?

If a business can’t answer these questions, then you’ll need to decide if you want to trust them with your personal information.

If you feel that they should not have it then don't put it and write to facebook at
