Significant Charges By A 9 Year Old

We learnt that my 9 year old has racked up significant charges on my father-in-law's credit card on Facebook games, namely Farmville. The amount is over $1,000. Our child thought that it was not real cash when she was buying the items. But since my father-in-law's card was saved in the account due to a $2 purchase a while ago, it was still active. We deactivated the account as soon as learnt this. We closed the credit card account also. We do not know what we can do. Will Facebook or Farmville credit the account back? Not sure how the credit card company will handle it. Please advise. Thanks.

Legally, you may not have any remedy for this situation. Facebook terms of service prohibit users that young from joining facebook for many reasons including this one. Since the credit card was initially stored with valid authorization, the credit card company is also under no obligation to make any remedies available. It is an unfortunate situation, but in the end, allowing the 9 year old access was not Facebook or the credit company's fault, so they are both unlikely to cut you any slack.
