In most cases you'd want to deactivate your account, not delete it. The two actions have the same effect, but after deactivation your account can be restored.

For deactivation:

  1. Click the account menu at the top right of any Facebook page
  2. Choose Account Settings
  3. Select Security from the left-hand menu
  4. Click on "Deactivate your account"

For deletion, press the Submit button on the deletion page.

Hope this is useful. Please don't forget to click the Accept This Answer button if you do accept it. My aim is to provide reliable helpful answers, not just a lot of them. See https://www.helpowl.com/profile/Odin.

If you don't think you'll use Facebook again, you can request to have your account permanently deleted.
Please keep in mind that you won't be able to reactivate your account or retrieve any of the content or information you've added. Before you do this, you may want to download a copy of your info from Facebook. Then, if you'd like your account permanently deleted with no option for recovery, log in to your account and fill out this form.
