The curve I'm talking about resembles a third eye of a dog, cat, or reptile. That protective piece prevents further damage to the vacuum from a large object, like a pencil piece, sneaking its way in the hose.
NEXT, twist the hose back into the upright gently and the hose as much into its original shape as possible. Spray a TINY BIT WD40 in the plastic wand's dip at the front of the vacuum. Work the grease through. Wipe clean.
If that didn't fix anything, check the hose for clogs (all along the machine), filter (for a lodged object), and the connection of the motor head to the canister by seals AND 2 metal pins that make a connection from the motor to the canister. They are on the left inner of the motor head. Make sure these aren't damaged or dirty.
Make sure to clean your canister, seals, and outer of DC18 fairly often. Like once per season, to ensure no loss of suction.
