Suction When Head Is Down

we had a hard time getting the head to release and when we did it does not have the suction it used to have. It seems to have alot of air coming from around the filter area. When you use the hose it has real good suction but the head is in the upright position and when we release the head and put the hose back in place it does not suck as hard as it used too.
