Dotted Box Lit Up Around The Prd123 On Dashboard.

When accelerating in my caliber, gears seem to slip in and out. only for a second or two. The dotted box on the dash comes and goes. Took it to a repair shop they said the transmission was a closed system and they couldn't help. Needed to take it to a dealership. I have an appointment... a week from now. Any thoughts on what the dotted box means or what could be the problem?
