A problem with the piston ring
A blockage in the piston cylinder
A problem with the return spring
A problem with the valve
If you have pushed the piston back with a tool and it is still not returning to rest position, it is likely that there is a problem with one of these components.
To troubleshoot the issue, I would recommend checking the following:
Piston ring: If the piston ring is damaged or worn, it will not be able to create a seal between the piston and the cylinder wall. This will allow air to leak past the piston, preventing it from returning to rest position. To inspect the piston ring, you will need to remove the piston from the cylinder.
Piston cylinder: If the piston cylinder is blocked, it will prevent the piston from moving freely. To check for a blockage, insert a long, thin object into the cylinder. If you encounter any resistance, this indicates that there is a blockage.
Return spring: The return spring is responsible for pushing the piston back to rest position. If the return spring is broken or damaged, it will not be able to push the piston back to rest position. To inspect the return spring, remove the piston from the cylinder and check to see if the spring is intact.
Valve: The valve controls the flow of air into and out of the piston cylinder. If the valve is damaged or worn, it may not be able to close properly, which will allow air to leak into the cylinder and prevent the piston from returning to rest position. To inspect the valve, remove the valve cover and check to see if the valve is intact.
If you find any problems with any of these components, you will need to replace them. Once you have replaced the damaged components, the piston should return to rest position properly.
If you are not comfortable troubleshooting the issue yourself, I would recommend taking the compressor to a qualified repair technician.
