You should be able to change your ticketed flight but there is usually a cost. Most airlines charge a change fee to change flights after a ticket has been issued and it can be expensive.  There can also be additional fees besides the standard "change fee" depending on the price and availability of the date & flight you're hoping to confirm in place of the original flight.  Delta normally charges a $150 change fee for domestic travel and higher change fees for international.  

If you're considering changing your return flight the best thing to do is call Delta and ask them your options.
