Intermittent Fan & Explosive Sound

Our vent began working intermittently a few weeks ago (would come on only 30s to several minutes after being switched on). 2 days ago, while reheating food, there was a loud sharp noise (like arcing). There was no burning smell or other unusual signs. We turned off the unit right away and have not dared use it since. Before lugging this to a service centre, wondering if anyone knows if this might be a simple switch issue or if the whole unit is likely toast and not worth repairing?
