In general you need a clear unobstructed view of the southern or south-western sky (my location) from the dish whether installed on your house, garage or a pole in your yard.
I suggest that you take your area's snow accumulation into consideration when selecting a mounting location. Despite the fact the the current dishes have a snow -repellent coating - a significant improvement from the early days - there may be times when you have to clear snow from the dish. Can you reach the dish with a mop from a window? For some, a pole installation in the yard is more practical. Just remember that you will need to dig a trench to bury the coaxial cable properly. Trenching in frozen ground can be problematic.

Another way to get directions is to hook up the receiver to the phone line and the television. When turned on, the receiver will ask you to enter your zip code (using the remote) At this point you will be provided with the proper elevation and horizontal coordinates. Using a compass helps for the next steps.
You will want to check the signal strength before you pack up your tools. The ideal signal strength is as close to 100% as possible - no less than 70%. You may need to adjust for proper angles a few times for optimum signal strength. That's good enough might not work well in a rain storm.
Oh yes, don't forget to ground the installation.
