Calcium buildup due to the type of water you use could also be a reason why you're not seeing any brew end up in the carafe. The buildup can usually be cleaned out with a toothpick or dissolved by running the coffee maker with vinegar in the water reservoir.

If you own a Cuisinart SS series, you have to press the 8oz and 6oz buttons at the same time to dispense water. This is a common fix to the cleaning light. The reason this works is because it flushes water through the machine, getting rid of any leftover vinegar or gunk inside the machine.

Sometimes when people see their coffee maker has stopped brewing coffee and is just creating steam, they assume that the coffee maker is broken and that they have to throw it away. ... When your coffee pot remains empty, but the water heats up, you are most likely looking at a clog in the coffee maker.

Your single serve only brewing a little bit of coffee and then stopping indicates that a clogged needle is preventing it from working properly. You need to deescalate or remove the reservoir during brew to address the issue.
