We Had Coffee All Over The Counter. Should We Keep The Top On While Brewing

we made 6 cups .put in water. ground the coffe beans and set it fot 6am. we did not put the top on the pot. we we woke there was coffe all over the counter from under the unit. what didwe do wrong
