If there is other contact information associated with the ad, notify the advertiser of the error. Otherwise, the ad if not renewed will expire after a fixed number of days, depending on the location, as shown here. In the meantime your friend's only solution is to work with his phone system. Some voice mail systems allow him to block incoming messages with an explanation to the caller, but allow your friend to either pick up or return the call. At the least, he can change his answering machine's outgoing phone message to explain, and then he can selectively return calls, until the ad expires.
