Concerned About Fraud

I have a number of pieces of furniture to advertise on Craigslist and tried my first two. Several respondents immediately asked me where the can send a certified check and, one cleared, when they can pick the piece up. Some of the text respondents have area codes no where near Chicago and do not answer when I ask where they are located an if they are resellers.Please advise on "do's and don'ts" for avoiding fraud.

1. Don't ever accept a check, certified or not. These are all commonly forged, and if so and they "clear," you'll eventually be responsible

2. Regarding the one you've already accepted, that has "cleared": Consult your bank at once to see what you can do, in view of the above.

3. Accept payment in future in cash only, at a public place.
