Luggage

My in-laws are flying tomorrow from Newark to San Francisco then jumping right back on from San fran to Monterey Ca because there are no direct flights. This trip is already booked. The question is, once they land in San Fran do they have to get there luggage or will it be automatically transferred to the connecting flight. Thank you for your help

Their luggage should be transferred to their connecting flight as long as their tickets were issued as 1 ticket (showing connecting flights) and as long as the flights had legal (DOT) connections. The exceptions to this would be if they purchased a ticket on 1 airline from EWR to SFO and a separate ticket from SFO to Monterey on an airline that doesn't have a baggage agreement with the first flight airline. Without knowing the airline, I can't say for sure, but most likely if it's the same airline for both flights - they're luggage will be checked all the way to Monterey.
