Timing Belt Breakage
can the valves in the head of a 2.4 liter motor get damaged if the timing belt breaks?

Yes, it is possible that the valves will get damaged if the belt breaks. This engine is known as an interference type engine. When the timing belt breaks, the crankshaft moves the pistons up and down when you crank the engine. The problem is that the camshafts do not move because they are driven by the belt. This is what causes the valves to sometimes bend. Some of the valves may be in the open position and get damaged by the piston hitting them in the combustion chamber.
You may get lucky and the valves may not bend. But the odds are that one or more of them will get bent, especially if you cranked the engine multiple times trying to start it after the belt broke.
