This machine does not support changing the density (darkness) of the output. If the ink is insufficient, the output may appear lighter. (Go to this Canon page and link to the article listed sixth.) Otherwise, you density is controlled by the application (e.g., word processing program) from which you're printing.

Thank you for contacting Canon product support. I can assist you with your PIXMA MG2520.

Please perform the following steps to scan using the ScanGear:

1. Place the photo on the platen.

2. Start IJ Scan Utility.

a. From the Start menu, select All Programs > Canon Utilities > IJ Scan Utility > IJ Scan Utility to start IJ Scan Utility.

The Start screen replaces the Start menu in Windows 8.1 andWindows RT 8.1. Open Start by swiping in from the right edge of the screen and then tapping Start. (Or, if you're using a mouse, point to the lower-left corner of the screen, move your mouse all the way into the corner, and then click Start.)

3. Click Settings..., select the Settings (ScanGear) dialog box, then set the paper size, resolution, etc. as required.

4. When setting is completed, click OK.

5. Click ScanGear.

ScanGear starts.

6. Click the Advanced Mode tab.

The tab switches to Advanced Mode. From here you can darken the scans. Note that when you go to the advanced mode, the basic mode resets.

Note:

Settings are not retained when you switch modes. (That's what I meant about being reset.)

7. Set Scanning Resolution next to Output Resolution under Output settings.

8. Click Preview.

Preview images appear in the Preview area.

8. Adjust the cropping frame (scan area), correct image, and adjust colors as required.

Go to the area just below Image Settings and it's associated choices.

You will see five icons, the first two of which are a circle with many colors and a circle that is half black and half white. This is where you make the adjustment for the darker scan. See the attached photos that should clarify the situation.

Sorry, my third photo was not published by this site. But if you click the image circle that is half white/half black, a screen will come up that allows one to adjust the lightness and darkness of the scan.

Make the scan lighter or darker as described.

9. Click Scan.

Scanning starts.

Please let us know if we can be of any further assistance.

Thank you for choosing Canon.

Sincerely,

Ebony from Canon (with some additional notations by me)
