How To Make The Printer Operational.

My husband found a Canon MP 610 printer. Turned it on to see if it would work, but keep getting this message: 5100 "Printer error has occured. Turn off power then turn back on again. If problem persists, see the manual." There was no manual, so I hope that you can help me figure out what's going on. I don't see where any ink cartridges go, so it is possible it could be out of ink.
