Battery Altanater

should my 1998 Buick LeSabre shut off when i remove the positive battery cable

Yes, removing either of the battery leads will open the circuit created by the battery and electrical system, causing the circuit to be incomplete. The potential difference between the battery terminal ends will be zero, meaning no voltage is being delivered to your distributor or coil pack depending on your vehicle.
