Buick Slylark Thermstat

1997 buick skylark thermostat falls into the engine even with the rubber gasket around it . cant figger it out? been doing  this for years and never seen such a stupid setup

The thermostat is not where you think it would be, like the thermostat housing. it is under the exhaust manifold next to the water pump. A real pain to get at.
