Starter Not Working

when i try to start the car nothing happens and the wires start to smoke. this is only when i try to start it it does not happen when the key is in the on position

Check the wires connected to the starter. Either the starter wires are touching each other or one of the wires is grounding to metal on the vehicle. Just be sure to disconnect the negative battery cable before you touch the starter wires. It's very easy to accidentally touch the wires together and get a shock and some sparking.
