Do your parents still have the manual? I think you will need it to find the directions. I will try and search online and update my answer if I find it.

I found my Uniden manual, mine is TRU 8885 Series
It says to press the answer on/off button on the base when the phone is in standby. The sub-display should then say OFF. On my base the button is on the lower left of the base, hope that helps you.
