How Should Dvd Player Be Connected When Using Uverse Box?

I connected the DVD player to my Harmon-Kardon receiver. I can switch the controller to Panasonic DVD player and I can watch the DVD but I can't hear all 5 speakers; I can only hear 2? I connected with an HDMI cable from the Harmon-Kardon to the DVD player and also with a digital Optical Video cable which was suggested by the DVD instrction manual. Everything else (CD player, TV, AM-FM receiver all play through all 5 speakers. Can someone offer any suggestions, please?
