Internet Service
I called our phone company to setup Internet service and was asked for my social security number. I refused to give the rep my SSN and he said he could not setup Internet service without first doing a credit check which requires a SSN. We are told constantly through the media not to give our SSN to anyone. How do I get the services I need without releasing my SSN?

if you call the phone number on bill or in phone book it is usually safe to give the information, if you want to eliminate human interaction. most utility companies have an automated online credit approval you enter your information it electronicaly runs credit and then all the provider sees is ok credit or deposit amount they never get to see number and secure server resets for another applicant that is the long of it. if their policy is to run a credit check then your choices are one of the above ideas, going without, or finding a provider that doesn't do a credit check(usually prepaid) verison has a prepaid wireless plan, i found a couple in my area where you get a wireless hub that gets a signal from tower and turns house into wifi hot spot the prepaid is generaly more expensive though
