A default gateway is the node that is assumed to know how to forward packets on to other networks. For more details see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Default_gateway.

A default gateway serves as an access point or IP router that a networked computer uses to send information to a computer in another network or the Internet.

A gateway is a router that determines where your messages and other go on the Internet. Each IP server has a router that is only used if the router cannot determine which router should be sent it, it sends the message to a default router since the message must be sent somewhere. Every server has this default router so your message will always go somewhere.
