Hi. Default gateway is accounted for here http://compnetworking.about.com/od/internetaccessbestuses/f/default_gateway.htm and 10.255.255.1 is the default gateway for all 1&1 Dedicated Servers

A gateway is a router that determines where your messages and other go on the Internet. Each IP server has a router that is only used if the router cannot determine which router should be sent it, it sends the message to a default router since the message must be sent somewhere. Every server has this default router so your message will always go somewhere.
