why are strangers suddenly trying to start games with me? This has never happened and I haven't changed anything in my settings. I don't want strangers contacting me.

These invitations should come only from your friends on any of the social networks. If the issue persists, go to https://support.zynga.com or https://forums.zynga.com. (There's no phone support. Sorry.)
