Words With Friends Alert Sounds Not Working When Ipad Air Is Turned Off.

Can't get alert sounds to work for Words With Friends when Ipad Air is turned off. The banner is visible though. Everything is turned on in Notifications Centre. I also have an Ipad 2 and the alerts can be clearly heard when an alert comes in when it is turned off. Can you help please.
