Sizing Photos

When I upload my photos they only allow me to use a small square of the picture and not the whole picture that I had intended. Why is this? And how can I get it to show more than just my face?  There is NO info about picture sizes or formats on the websie.

Industry standard is 72dpi. Anything more is wasting space (bandwith) and time.

In Photoshop and Illustrator there is an option to save for web. It will show you your file size at different optimizations before you save.
