Can't Find Happy Medium For Refrigerator And Freezer Controls.

I purchased a Whirlpool top refrigerator / bottom freezer model WRT5L1SMYF in August 2011.  There is only one temperature control, located in the refrigerator.  I have tried all the "snowflakes" (the different temperature settings) but cannot seem to find a place where either the refrigerator does not freeze items or the freezer does not melt ice cream.  I have read the manual and searched online.  The air vents are not blocked, the condenser fan seems to be working, and the coils are not covered in dust.  What are other possibilities to check before I call the repair man? Thank you for any assistance you are able to provide.
