Using The Hard Drive Without Its Included Software
This HD has a backup software included ("Smartware"). Many users write that it is impossible to eliminate or to ignore it and to do the back-up when and how they want. I am interested in such a functionality and I'll receive the ordered unit in a few days.Thanks for the help.

I just purchased a similar WD product & do not want to use the SmartWare software. Type the following into Google: http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/wdsmartwareupdate/Step1.asp?id=wdfMB_Essential+os=WIN. The first search result will be "WD Product Update Jun 15, 2011". Click on it for the WD website page with your drive info. On the right side of the screen click on "User Manual". Page 15 has a description of the "Do Not Install" option. If this doesn't work, return to the original page & again on the right side click on "Utilities". Step 2 contains the instructions for disabling the software. These are the results of my research; I haven't tried it yet so we'll be learning together. If you have a Mac computer, just substitute MAC for WIN in the above URL. Good Luck! jaz2
