When I Press 'talk' It Turns Off.

I just got phone service through a Gateway modem where I plug in the phone cord. It shows the battery is charging, it also displays " Handset 1", the missed calls, time and date. I tested calling it and it rings, shows caller ID but as soon as I press "TALK" it turns off and it keeps ringing. Every time I press the TALK button it turns off. i's a Vtech Dect 6.0 with two Handsets.
