RETURN TO SENDER

WE RECEIVED A SMALL PACKAGE OF A DEFECTIVE PRODUCT.  CAN WE PUT BACK INTO THE PRIORITY MAIL BOX AND JUST WRITE : RETURN TO SENDER" OR DO WE HAVE TO PAY TO RETURN IT VIA USPS ?

I believe you can just write "RTS" on the package and bring it to any post office as long as the package has not been opened. If it has been opened, I do not think USPS will return it for you.
