Toshiba Satellite L840d Battery Life

I bought a Toshiba Satellite L840D recently, and since I have been using it the battery life has not been more than 1 hour. But I learnt that the battery life should be at least 6 hours. Please what can I do so enhance the battery life to the normal 6 hours that it is supposed to be?
