Based on your description it appears you have OS and Data file corruption. You could try a repair of the OS if you have an XP/Vista/Windows 7 disk but that won't help you recover data files. Your best option was slaving the damaged drive just as you did to try and recover the data portion. Unfortunately, if that doesn't work (ie - the drive is 'empty') that means there is irreparable damage on the hard drive and no data can be recovered.
