No Desktop Appears Once Connecting Toshiba 19lv61k To Windows Xp - Sos!

I connected a Toshiba 19LV61K TV to my Windows XP (VGA cable) and followed the manual's instructions exactly - a child could follow these directions. I made sure the PC was set to 60 Hz and have changed the resolution to various settings (low-high). I read, on this site, that setting it to 1366x768 was recommended, but my PC doesn't offer that. I've also selected the input mode on the TV to PC. I can see and hear Windows boot, but once I expect to see my desktop, it's just not there - just a black screen. I've checked the video card: NVIDIA GE Force 6800, Version 6.6.7.2, everything is working properly and is up-to-date. Note: I had this exact set-up, but using a 32" Proscan TV, and had no problems until the Proscan stopped working properly last week and will need repair. In the meantime, I really need to understand how to use the Toshiba as this PC's monitor immediately.
