Check Engine Light Appeared

Once that sign came up my speed limit reduced to only 20 mph, I tried pressing on the gas pedal but car would not go above 20. Did not stall, even when I pressed the brakes would it stop. I turned car off to check under the hood for any leaks. When I turned it back on it was the same.
