Why Does Phone Say 'text Message Memory Full' When I Have One Text On My Phone?!

Several texts were rejected this morning, ostensibly because "Text message memory (is) full."  That's impossible, since I'm nowhere even close to the allotted number of texts.  I'm also being told that I'm "Low on space," which is also not possible.  I cannot find any troubleshooting guides to help me.
