Cd Skips And Rewinds Randomly

I bought this unit used and it has a wonderful sound both on CD and FM.  I hate to give up the CD feature but the unit keeps skipping and restarting by itself.  I thought it may be dirty so I removed the cover but couldn't find a problem.  I'm capable of replacing the CD unit if it is practical.  I noticed that the unit's pickup "light" jumps when the CD is skipping.  I'm not sure if that is indicative of the problem or a symtom. Thanks for the help, Eddie
