I Get No Sound From My Headset (sony Mdr-rf970r)

I replaced the battery, but I am not sure that the charger/ receiver is working correctly. The charger has a green light with the headset off. Whrn I put the headset on the charger, the light goes off. The unit is a few years old. It first started happening a few months ago when sometimes the sound would cut out, then come back on. I recently replaced the batteries and get no sound. I checked all the connections. Has anyone had this problem? Is the unit failing?
