Skype Wants My Credit Card And Social Security Numbers...why?

I just recieved an email from skype and they want my credit card information and social security number in order to update my account information. Why do they need this if I get skype for free? I am not comfortable with this request. I can't reach skype. in this day and age you would think they would have the basic "contact us" info and be customer service oriented. Very poor business practices!
