My Iron Leaves White Chips When Steaming.

Prior to leaving town for 3 months I emptied my iron. Today I filled it with "spring water" and when I went to iron there were small white deposits on my clothes. I turned up the temp and manualy steamed. More deposits came out. Should I try white vinegar? Can I switch to my softened water (we have well water that is run through a water softener)? Can I use water from the reverse osmosis tap that we use for drinking? Thanks.
