I guess you may be mistaking gears. The computer will inhibit the overdrive shift until the engine reaches a certain operating temperature. The transmission will not shift into overdrive gear even with the overdrive on if the engine coolant temperature is low. Always drive with overdrive ON during normal driving conditions. This will allow the transmission to shift automatically into 4-speed operation at higher speeds that increases fuel economy. The overdrive is OFF if the indicator light on the instrument cluster is illuminated.

If you were to let the car idle in your driveway for 5 minutes and then get in and drive, it would hit the overdrive shift much sooner. Most of the time, it's easy to mistake torque converter lockup for Overdrive When in fact, it is already in overdrive when lockup occurs.
