we bought one of these off of craigslist and the parent unit battery was not holding charge.

i disassembled it and found that it is actually composed of two standard rechargeable NiMH AAA batteries in a two piece plastic housing with a thermal protection device (for fire safety) connecting the two batteries.

you can use the existing housing and two store-bought NiMH AAA batteries, paying attention to the correct orientation, and jumper them with a piece of aluminum foil.

However, please note that the presence of a thermal protector in the OEM battery assembly may indicated that they have had problems with overheating or fires arising from battery charging and that my proposed cheaper-than-buying-the-OEM-replacement solution removes any safety from the equation.  accordingly, you might consider only plugging it in when attended or removing the assembly entirely and charging the individual AAA batteries with a different charger when they are fully discharged.

That being said, I plug the parent unit in with my modified battery assembly and it charges without incident and the batteries feel cool to the touch throughout a charge cycle.
