Loud Engine Ticking Noise.

There is a loud ticking noise coming from the engine. The ticking increases as you accelerate. What is it? Will this cause more serious damage to the engine?

Check the oil level first. Make sure your oil is up to the "full" line on your dipstick. If it isn't, add oil until it reaches that line. If the sound goes away after adding it, then you should be okay. You probably didn't do any serious damage to the engine.

Could be an exhaust manifold gasket leak. Start the car and run your hand above the exhaust manifold (do not touch it! VERY hot) and you might feel the exhaust leak. You may smell it as well. Exhaust manifold gaskets are not hard to replace, but they can take a couple of hours to do.

If it isn't either of those problems, then you probably have engine problems. Sticking lifters, bent push rods or some other problem. You may just need a lifter adjustment, though. Take the car to someone you trust and get their opinion on the noise.
