1) Set the packet data connectivity to 'Always Online' (Important)

Menu -> Settings -> Connectivity -> Packet Data -> Packet data Connection -> Always Online

2) Make sure an email account is set up (assuming that everyone should have done this to access emails)

3) Select an email account you set up in step 2. Click 'Options' on the bottom left of the screen. Go to 'Settings'. Set the option 'When roaming' to 'Follow my account settings'. (This setting may not be required unless you are on roaming.)

4) Come back to email accounts screen and login to the email account.

5) Select 'Options' on the bottom left of the Inbox screen. Go to 'More' option. Select 'Settings'.

6) On the 'Account Settings' screen, set 'Select My Inbox' option to 'Fast' (Updates the inbox automatically by preloading the message headers. The message content is loaded when you open it.) - (Important)

7) On the 'Account Settings' screen, set 'Alert me for new mails' to 'On'. (This will alert you with a sound and a message on the home screen when an email is pushed to your inbox). - (Important)

8) On the 'Account Settings' screen, select 'Options' from the bottom left of the screen and 'Save' the changes you just did (Important step). You will be back on the inbox screen. You can even exit from the email account by clicking 'Back' option to the bottom right of the screen. This will still keep your push email working in the background.
