Will Another Cd Stereo Unit Work With My Steering Controls In My Nissan Xtrail

The CD  player in my 2004 Nissan Xtrail SVE DCI does not work.  Will another head unit work in my car and still give me the use of my steering wheel controls?  I know you can get adapters but don't know if this will still work. I would like access to Ipod which another stereo would give me but don't want to give up the controls on the steering wheel.  Is there a compatible unit that I can use or do I have to get the system replaced or repaired? I would be grateful for your help with this. Debbie Busby
