Mode Dial Is Not In The Proper Position

WHEN I TURN ON THE CAMERA WHEN MODE OF DIAL IS AUTO THEN SCREEN DISPLAYS THE MESSAGE THAT " MODE DIAL IS NOT IN THE PROPER POSITION". WHEN I ROTATE THE MODE TO S OR NEXT MODES THEN MESSAGE DISAPPEAR AND I CAN TAKE PHOTOS. BUT WHEN I ROTATE AGAIN THE DIAL TO P OR AUTO MODE THEN SCREEN DOES NOT SHOW THE ICON OF AUTO MODE. PLEASE GUIDE ME .
