Does The Adapter Need A Password To Connect To The Web?

My adapter is attached to my laptop which is connected to my desktop computer through a router network.  I can access the Web through the laptop but when I try to access the Web through my Nook e-reader, I can select my network, but it asks for a password.  I have a 7-character password for the router, but not for the adapter.  It won't accept the password for the router.  If I have one for the adapter, but just don't remember it, how do I get the password, or set it up again?  Thank you.
