My Truck Started Over Heating And Turning On The Heater Bring Temp Down To Norma

Turn on heater to bring temp back to normal. turning the heater off temp goes up. Cooling tank looked backed up and it looked like it wanted to over flow. i Released the pressure by taking the cap off. then when back down to normal. I have read that it might be the thermostat. also read that draining the radiator coolant and flush it out. I havent flushed anything nor replaced anything yet.
