2008 Maytag Mtf1842eeq Not Cold Enough.

My 2008 Maytag MTF1842EEQ cooled fine until a few months ago. Then ice started forming inside the freezer air ducting which apparently sends cold air to the lower refrigerator portion. Despite being set on the coldest setting the lower section doesn't keep things cold enough now and they spoil too soon. I've tried lower settings to see if  that was causing the problem with no help. I chip out some of the ice in the openings in the back of the freezer section (without removing the plastic covers 'cause I can't figure out how to take them off) but the ice just forms again very quickly. This is supposed to be a self-defrosting unit but now it isn't. Will shutting it off for a day or so & letting all the ice in the ducts melt help, or is there some mechanical failure at the root of the problem? Also, the ice maker initiually stopped working when all this started, then started working again...the cubes are frozen but kind of covered with fine shavings and freeze together in a block. Thanks!
